Here are five of our favourite ways to make the journey through the Southern Way regions.. Take your time, go your own way.

Savour & Sip Adventure

After landing in Dunedin, it’s time to indulge in the local cuisine and craft beer and you’ll be ready to savour and enjoy every mouthful!

Head straight to the vibrant city centre, where you'll find a delightful mix of new eateries and beloved local favourites, all offering the best of Dunedin’s food and beverage scene.

Dive into the region’s brewing heritage with Speight’s Brewery Tour, one of New Zealand's oldest and most iconic breweries, or explore Emerson’s Brewery Tour, known for its innovative craft beers and rich history. Both tours offer an in-depth look at the brewing process and a chance to sample some of the finest local brews, making them a must for any beer lover visiting Dunedin.

Dunedin is a hub for creative artisan producers, with locals crafting innovative, fresh, and nourishing foods and beverages that are hard to find anywhere else. For a true taste of the region, head to the Otago Farmers Market every Saturday, where you can discover and sample the coolest handcrafted goods straight from the makers themselves.

Southern Scenic Route

Fly into Dunedin to begin your journey along the Southern Scenic Route, and give yourself time to linger. This is a city where gorgeous heritage architecture meets a coastline teeming with wildlife, and every turn seems to lead to  something fascinating, quirky or fun.

Just beyond the city, the Otago Peninsula stretches out like a wild invitation - it's the perfect place to explore in autumn if you want to encounter wildlife up close. New Zealand sea lions lounge on empty beaches, little blue penguins shuffle ashore at dusk and at the tip, the Royal Albatross Centre offers the rare chance to see the world’s only mainland breeding colony of the enormous northern royal albatross. While on the Otago Peninsula, pop in to Augustine’s of Portobello Farmstore and Kitchen, you won't be disappointed.

There’s history woven into the landscape too. Perched above the harbour, Larnach Castle - New Zealand’s only castle - feels like stepping back in time. Built in 1871 and lovingly restored, it’s surrounded by gardens that are especially striking as the trees change colour, all sculptural branches and soft autumn hues. Stay the night in the Lodge or the charmingly reimagined stables, and round off the evening with the Castle Dinner, a unique historic dining experience that makes for a truly memorable stay.

Back in the city, Dunedin offers no shortage of places to rest your head - from character-filled boutique stays to easy, central apartments. Great places to spend the night before you hit the road on your adventure.

Winter is a great time to visit—wildlife activity often peaks, and the moody skies enhance the peninsula’s breathtaking landscapes. It’s an ideal season for a peaceful, immersive nature experience.

At dusk, experience the enchanting Blue Penguins Pukekura Evening Tours, where you can watch the world’s smallest penguins return to shore after a day at sea. For a truly exceptional stay on the Otago Peninsula, stay and dine at Larnach Castle, New Zealand’s only castle. Perched on the summit of Baldwin Hill, it offers panoramic views, lush landscapes, and rugged coastline. Steeped in history, the castle features restored rooms, exceptional dining, and beautifully landscaped gardens—blending heritage, luxury, and natural beauty in a truly unique setting.
